How to Spend Time With Your Family

Spending time with family is such a simple concept, yet families get so busy with work and school and extracurricular activities that they quickly lose touch with their family members, even the ones who live in the same house with them. If you feel like this describes you, then just follow these simple tips on how to spend time with your family.

Instructions

  1. Make your family a priority. You set aside time for exercise, work and extracurricular activities. Now you need to set aside family time by planning at least one evening a week when everyone is required to be home, and don't allow any interruptions.

  2. Have a plan. This is a great opportunity for you to grow closer together, so plan to do some things that will encourage family unity. Sit down and talk to each other, play a game, or dance to some music. Just have fun.

  3. Eat supper together. Even if you can't set aside an entire evening for family time, you can certainly set aside half an hour to eat together. It doesn't have to be a fancy meal, and you can help alleviate the burden on any one person by having everyone make dinner together. Clean up should be a group activity as well.

  4. Turn off the television. So much time is lost by watching television. Turn the TV off and just enjoy talking to each other. Ask your children and your spouse about their days, and take the time to listen to them.

  5. Take a trip together. Sometimes you just need to get out of town in order to reconnect to the ones you love. You don't have to go anywhere spectacular. Pack a picnic and go for a hike up the mountains or spend a day at the beach. Give each family member a turn to do something that they enjoy, so the day becomes about everyone.

Tips & Warnings

  • Eliminate an extracurricular activity or two if you just can't manage to squeeze in family time.
  • Rearrange your work schedule to make room for family time.
  • Make sacrifices in other areas of your life to spend time with your family.
  • Don't bring work home with you to distract you during family time.
  • Don't allow for excuses from your family members to avoid family time.
  • Don't volunteer for committees if you can't make time for your family.
